Biography
Career
After serving in tanks, artillery, the security police and firemen in the army for two years, Fred graduated City College of NY, and then received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Northwestern University. He then became a researcher in mental health and a founding member of the Behavior Therapy Seminar at Harvard Medical School.
From Harvard, he joined the faculty of SUNY, Stony Brook, taught the advanced graduate course in Psychotherapy, and became Director of the Psychological Center.
He now does private therapy and writes a monthly column for the LI Pulse.
Home Life
Married for 41 years, and father of two sons and four grandchildren, Fred resides in both Port Jefferson and New York City.
Author/Speaker
Fred has written, edited, and co-authored books in "Human Motivation," "Conceptualization in Psychotherapy", and "Winning the Homework War." He has written and edited many articles for professional journals and on marital issues for "Working Mother" magazine. Fred's book, with Kathy Anesko, "Winning the Homework War," has been featured in, "Reader's Digest."
Fred has been invited to lecture on Psychotherapy in England, Spain, Italy, and in Zimbabwe. He was the Invited Speaker to the Eastern Psychological Association for his research in stuttering and tics. He has given many lecture at Universities in the US.
Among his radio appearances are on BBC worldwide twice, The Canadian Broadcast Company, and many US stations. He has appeared on national and local TV, including CNN.
Services
Fred founded the Volunteers for Psychiatric Patients while at Stony Brook. Under his direction, up to 400 student volunteers went to psychiatric hospitals to help meet recreational needs of patients.
He founded the Epilepsy Association of Suffolk County with Sister Rita (of the Daughters of Wisdom at St. Charles Hospital), the Spina Bifida Association, and the Parents of Retarded Children. Fred was the founder of the Greater Port Jefferson Arts Council.
In the political arena, Fred served on the Port Jefferson Planning Board, and became its Chair, and served as a Trustee and Building Commissioner of the Village.
